Should you dress your dog up for Halloween?

If you have a dog that likes to play dress-up, then why not.

Not only does it help your pet get used to wearing clothes and accessories, but it makes for great photos. If you want a laugh, just search “dog Halloween costumes” on the internet and be prepared for some laughs at all of the purebred dogs dressed like Thrasher, the skateboarding bulldog.

Pick a Dog Halloween Costume that is Comfortable and Humane

It is important that if you plan on buying or making a Halloween costume for your dog, that it be humane and comfortable. A lot of costumes leave very little room costume for movement.

If you are going to buy a dog Halloween costume from a store, try to find one with velcro or zippers in the front so that it is quick and easy to put on and take off.

Also, make sure you get your dog used to wearing clothes before Halloween. Put their sweater on them for a walk around the house so they can get used to the feel of it.

What to Avoid in a Dog Halloween Costume?

Yes, you can go to the pet store and buy a costume in your dog’s size that is cute. However, most of these are made from synthetic fabrics which can overheat your dog if worn for too long a time during Halloween festivities or trick-or-treating. Also, I personally don’t like costumes with hard plastic pieces that poke out.

Make sure that your dog can sit, lie down, and still be able to drink water in their Halloween costume. If they can’t fulfill their basic needs then don’t even think about getting it.

How to make your own dog Halloween costume?

Instead of purchasing a store-bought outfit, you can make one yourself with some scrap fabric that won’t irritate your dog’s skin and a sewing machine.  Here are some quick tips to help you get started on creating your own pet costume for Halloween.

Start with a base piece of fabric (a tank top works well) with either a zipper or velcro in the front. Decorate your dog’s outfit with felt, lace, ribbons, and buttons. You can even add some ruffles if you like!

If sewing is not your forte, then try to find someone who can custom make a treat bag for your dog with their name on it and/or a logo.

Word of caution: If you have a small dog, be sure to attach the bag securely so that it does not fall off during trick-or-treating or while playing with other dogs in costume.

If you are going to make a large treat bag, then consider dividing up the treats into smaller bags so that your dog has access to them when they need it.

One more thing… save money by purchasing some of those discounted Halloween shirts at the end of season sales and using them for your dog’s costume instead! Enjoy these photos of adorable dogs in their Halloween costumes!
